How to Record Acoustic Guitar With a Single Microphone
You do not need a cupboard of microphones to capture a good acoustic guitar track. One well-placed mic in a decent room will beat three badly placed mics every time.
A single microphone is enough to record a convincing acoustic guitar track. In fact, one well-chosen microphone in the right place will usually sound better than several mics fighting each other in a bad room. The goal is not to capture the instrument exactly as it sounds in the air; the goal is to capture a sound that sits well in the mix.
Why the soundhole is the wrong place to point
The soundhole produces a lot of low-mid energy and wind from the moving air inside the guitar. Point a microphone straight at the hole and you will get a boomy, muddy recording with an exaggerated thump every time the player digs in. It may sound loud and impressive in the room, but in a mix it turns into mud that is hard to remove.
A better starting point is around the 12th fret, where the neck meets the body. This area captures a balance of the string brightness, the body warmth, and the soundboard resonance. It tends to produce a cleaner, more focused tone with fewer bass problems. You still hear the body, but it is not overwhelming.
Distance and the proximity effect
The closer a directional microphone is to the source, the more bass it picks up. This is the proximity effect. A mic right on the guitar sounds full and intimate, but it can also be boomy and it exaggerates every scrape of the pick and movement of the fingers. Move the mic back to 30 or 40 centimetres and the bass calms down. The sound becomes more natural, and you start to hear the room as well as the instrument.
Most home recordings benefit from a distance of 20 to 40 centimetres. Start at 30 centimetres, aimed at the 12th fret, and listen. If the sound is too thin, move closer. If it is too boomy or cluttered, move further back or angle the mic more toward the bridge.
Small-diaphragm versus large-diaphragm condensers
A small-diaphragm condenser, such as a pencil mic, tends to be bright, detailed, and fast. It is excellent for capturing string articulation and is often the first choice for recording acoustic guitar in a studio. A large-diaphragm condenser is usually warmer and rounder, with a more pronounced proximity effect. It can sound beautiful on solo or singer-songwriter material.
If all you have is a dynamic microphone, such as a stage vocal mic, you can still get a usable sound. Dynamic mics are less sensitive and will need more preamp gain, and they tend to be mid-focused rather than sparkling on top. Place it closer, around 15 to 20 centimetres, and aim for the upper bout or the 12th fret to find the brightest balance. If you only have a phone or a laptop built-in microphone, the result will be limited, but the same placement principles apply: avoid the soundhole, keep some distance, and use the quietest room you can find.
The room matters more than the price tag
A great microphone in a terrible room still records the terrible room. The cheapest upgrade you can make is to choose the best space. Avoid small, boxy rooms with parallel hard walls, because they create flutter echo and standing waves. Bathrooms, stairwells, and kitchens often sound harsh and reflective. Softer spaces, such as a living room with a carpet and curtains, are usually kinder.
If your room is too live, make it deader. Drape a duvet behind the player and to the sides, angle the guitar away from corners, and put bookshelves or a wardrobe in the reflection paths. You do not need expensive acoustic panels. Heavy fabric and soft furnishings will do most of the work. The aim is to reduce obvious slap-back echo, not to turn the room into a dead studio.
Setting gain and leaving headroom
Acoustic guitar has a wide dynamic range. Strumming quietly then digging in can produce a big jump in level. Set your input gain so the loudest strums peak around -12 dB to -6 dB on the meter. That gives you headroom for sudden peaks and keeps the recording clean. If the meter touches 0 dB, back the gain down. Digital clipping is harsh and basically impossible to fix later.
Record in a quiet room with the computer or phone as far from the mic as practical. Turn off fans, air conditioning, and fridges if you can. Every bit of noise you avoid is one less thing to fight at mix time.
Strings, picks, and player noise
Fresh strings sound brighter and more alive, but they can also be squeaky. Old strings can sound dull and lifeless. Change strings a day or two before the session so they settle but still have sparkle. A thicker pick tends to emphasise attack and string noise; a thinner pick is softer and more forgiving. If you want a warm, fingerstyle sound, record with fingers or the fleshy side of the thumb.
Player noise is part of the instrument on acoustic guitar, but too much can be distracting. A mic very close to the fretboard will pick up every slide and squeak. Moving the mic back or angling it more toward the body will soften this. You can also use a little high-roll off later, but it is better to get the sound right at the source.
