How to Record a Song Using Only Your Phone

There is a particular paralysis that hits people who want to start recording. You read a forum thread and by the end of it you apparently need an interface, a large-diaphragm condenser, a boom arm, some acoustic panels and a laptop to run it all. So you buy nothing, record nothing, and the song stays in your head.
Meanwhile there is a device in your pocket with a decent microphone in it. It will capture a voice, an acoustic guitar and a drum part tapped out on your knees well enough that in six months you will be glad you have the recording. Almost everything that separates a bad phone recording from a surprisingly good one costs nothing.
Your phone is trying to help you, and that is the problem
Phone microphones are small omnidirectional MEMS capsules tuned for speech. They roll off the deep bass and they are not especially detailed at the top. Fine for singing and strummed guitar; not the way to capture a bass guitar or a ride cymbal.
But the tuning is not the real issue. The real issue is the processing. Voice isolation, noise suppression, wind reduction and automatic gain control all exist to make phone calls clear in a windy street, and every one of them is destructive when you are recording music. Noise suppression hears a sustained chord and decides it is background noise to remove. Automatic gain control hears you go quiet and winds the level up, dragging the room hiss with it.
Two quick tests will tell you whether it is happening. Record yourself playing and then falling silent - if the background hiss vanishes the instant you stop, suppression is on. Play something quiet, then something loud - if the quiet part sounds level-matched to the loud part, auto-gain is on.
There is a third one worth knowing about: echo cancellation. It exists to stop a phone call howling when the far end comes out of your speaker, and it does that by listening for anything that sounds like it is being fed back. A sustained note held into the mic can trigger it, and you get a strange ducking or warbling on exactly the notes you most wanted to hold.
Turning all three off is the highest-value thing you can do, and where you find the setting depends on your phone and your app. It is also the reason NovaStudio explicitly requests an unprocessed input stream, with noise suppression, automatic gain control and echo cancellation all switched off on every microphone it opens. The defaults are built for calls, not for songs, and there is no good reason to make you go hunting for them.
Five minutes of setup that beat any gear purchase
Aeroplane mode on. A notification arriving mid-take is the most reliable way to ruin a good performance.
Get the phone off hard surfaces. Flat on a desk, it picks up every knock and the reflection of your own voice bouncing off the desk. Stand it up against a book or a mug, sitting on a folded towel.
Find which end the mic is on - usually the bottom edge - and aim that end at what you are recording.
Start 20-30 cm away, slightly off to one side. Straight-on and close gives you plosives, the thump of air from every P and B. Angling the mic just off the line of your mouth fixes that for free. Closer than 15 cm gets boomy; beyond 50 cm you are recording the room.
Wired headphones, never Bluetooth. Bluetooth adds 100-300 ms of delay, which makes playing along to an existing track physically impossible, and on many phones connecting a Bluetooth headset switches the input to the headset's own voice mic, which sounds dreadful. Use wired and an adapter if you need one.
The room is your most important equipment
An omnidirectional mic rejects nothing, so you are recording the room whether you like it or not. Hard, parallel, empty surfaces are the enemy - a bare bedroom gives you a boxy recording with a slap of reflection behind every note.
The best vocal booth most people own is a wardrobe full of clothes. Open it, face into the hanging clothes, put the phone between you and them. A duvet over the back of a chair does much the same. Sit on the bed rather than at the desk, and stay out of corners.
Then kill the noise you have stopped noticing. Fridges, laptop fans, boilers and traffic sit under everything as a grey hum. Stand still and listen properly for thirty seconds, then switch off what you can.
Levels: quiet is recoverable, clipped is not
Phone mics have limited headroom, and digital clipping is one of the few problems you cannot fix afterwards. Aim for your loudest moments to peak around -12 to -6 dBFS, with visible space left at the top of the meter. Watch it while you perform the loudest part of the song, not while you talk into it.
Where you can, adjust distance rather than gain. Moving 10 cm further back is a cleaner way to drop the level than winding the input down and letting the noise floor rise with it.
Building a whole song with one microphone
The single-mic constraint pushes you towards the workflow that actually finishes songs.
Lay a guide track first. Play the song end to end - rough chords, rough vocal. It does not need to be good, it needs to exist, so everything else has something to lock to. Most recordings die because someone tries to perfect track one before track two exists.
Track in order of importance: rhythm, then low end, then harmony, then lead vocal, then decoration. If you run out of energy at track four, the important things are already down.
Use distance as your second instrument. With one mic and no EQ, moving changes the sound more than anything else available to you. Close and off-axis for an intimate lead; a step back and higher for backing vocals so they sit behind it.
Double-track things. Sing the same line twice on two tracks and pan them apart. The small timing and pitch differences between two imperfect takes are what create width. It costs nothing and it is the most effective trick a phone recordist has.
Make percussion from the room. Knees, chest, a hand on a closed book, a shoe box, keys, your own mouth. Since the phone mic rolls off the low end anyway, mid-range percussion close to the mic works far better than trying to fake a kick drum.
When your overdubs land late
This is the point where most people give up on phone recording, so it is worth naming. Even with everything set up correctly, there is a delay between you playing and the phone capturing it. Record a perfect overdub and it can still sit a few milliseconds behind the guide track, and the whole take feels sluggish for reasons you cannot pin down.
Software is supposed to compensate for this automatically, and NovaStudio does - it reads the latency figures the browser reports for your input and output path and trims that much off the front of each take as it is recorded. But those figures are an estimate, and they vary by device, browser and headphones.
That is why there is a manual latency offset slider, adjustable from 0 to 300 milliseconds. Record a test take against the guide track, listen to how it lines up, and nudge the offset up until it locks - higher values pull your takes earlier. It takes about a minute, the setting is remembered per device so you only do it once, and it is the difference between overdubs that feel tight and overdubs that feel vaguely late all session.
Quick troubleshooting
- Boomy or muddy - too close, back off 10 cm.
- Thin and distant - too far away, or the room is too live.
- Hollow and boxy - reflections off a nearby hard surface; move, or soften it.
- Thumps on P and B - angle the mic off the line of your mouth.
- The sound "breathes" - auto-gain is still on.
- Hiss vanishes in the gaps - noise suppression is still on.
- Harsh crunch on loud parts - you clipped. Re-record quieter; this one cannot be rescued.
Before you call anything finished, listen on one other system - a laptop, a car, someone else's earbuds - and listen quietly too. If the vocal disappears at low volume, it is too far back.
The point
None of this is a compromise you are making until you can afford real gear. Plenty of records people love were made on worse equipment than the phone you are holding, by people who understood their room and committed to their takes.
